TN Election

So this is my theory on TN election results. I would love to hear what you think. I think the TN election results is also a reflection of the populism that is on the rise across the world and this populism is a reflection of the larger discontent of the masses with the current economic status quo. In my opinion in this election a fair share of the people who supported DMK are liberal elites who are not much affected by economical precarities. So when any party comes into power, even if they don't substantially improve their economic conditions, it doesn't really affect the liberal elites that much because their economic realities are already in a decent place. But that's not the case for the masses who are seeking better economic prosperity for themselves, basically to lead a better life than what they already have. This is not to say that TVK will do substantially better than DMK.
But it's just that people feel that DMK hasn't done enough to change their economic realities and at least TVK will provide some hope or they will just bring some new energy to do that. This is where Vijay's popular image helps and yeah basically that's where the whole populism aspect of this hero worship and everything comes in. In my opinion these are just effects of the larger capitalistic structures and the forces that have failed to improve the living conditions of the masses and have continued to lead more wealth accumulation for a small section of society. I don't think TVK or any party can change this status quo in a single term. These conditions are very structural and Tamil Nadu's current economic conditions is also very much shaped by these global economic processes. We definitely need economic reforms at a structural level to avoid harmful populism. But on the other hand I also don't side with the liberals because we often tend to fail the economic realities of lots of people and the masses teach the liberal elites through democracy

Something that I am hopeful about with TVK is that it really does have a huge grassroots support and people power through young people and the fan clubs. I think if those energies can be channelized in a productive way, I do feel like they are capable of doing a lot more good than what DMK could achieve now. But yes TVK needs really good and thoughtful leadership to do that. I hope TN will thrive
